The spark that gave birth to Brooklyn Metropolis Lions Club was ignited in 2003 when Lion Eleanor Calendar, a charter member of Central Brooklyn Lions Club, invited Lion Sylvia D. Bayobeni to join the Lions Club organization.
Lion Eleanor saw in Lion Sylvia a woman with a heart and compassion for serving others and indeed she was correct. During Lion Sylvia’s time as a member of Central Brooklyn Lions Club, she spearheaded several projects and was an impactful leader. However, she wanted to make a larger contribution to the organization.
Five years later, on November 24, 2008, Brooklyn Metropolis Lions Club was chartered. The Club’s formation was inspired by Lion Sylvia’s desire to assist in the growth of the Lions Clubs organization with individuals in the 40-50 year age range who were interested in serving humanity.
Lion Sylvia enlisted Lion Donarie Fenton-Haughton to help spearhead the recruitment effort to ensure Brooklyn Metropolis met the requirements to be chartered. She also recruited Central Brooklyn Lions Club to serve as our sponsors.
Brooklyn Metropolis Alpha LEO’s Club
In 2014 the members of Brooklyn Metropolis Lions Club decided they were ready to incorporate young people into the “magic of serving others.” On March 7, 2014, Brooklyn Metropolis LEO’s Club was chartered. Lion Linda Scipio served as our first LEO advisor. Our Alpha LEOs were eager to learn and grow. Their enthusiasm added valuable insights to the Club’s outlook on service.
Metro Omega LEO’s Club
As time passed, our Alpha LEOs were growing up and the Club agreed that it was time to create a way to incorporate our young adults. On December 6, 2021, Brooklyn Metropolis proudly sponsored its 2nd LEO’s Club and Metro Omega LEO’s Club was created. Lion Patricia Draghine graciously agreed to serve as our 1st Advisor and Lion Monique Brizz-Walker served as Co LEO Advisor. Just as Central Brooklyn Lions Club, Inc. served as great sponsors for us, we paid their kindness forward and, to-date, have sponsored two Clubs: Brooklyn Leaders Lion Club and Brooklyn Jefferson Lions Club. Both are model clubs in our district and we are truly proud parents.
